the backyard of E.T.

Edmond Thieffry (28 sept.1892-11 apr.1929) was a Belgian First World War air ace and aviation pioneer. He made, with Léopold Roger and Jef de Bruycker, the first successful flight between Belgium and Congo.(3 apr. 1925). In april 1929 he crashed his plane near the lake Tangayika. E.T. died at 36 years.

In 1915, Thieffry joined the Compagnie des Ouvries et Aérostiers—the Belgian Army Air Corps—and with some difficulty qualified as a pilot at Etampes. He crash-landed so many aircraft during training, that he was promptly assigned to a single-seat fighter squadron, as no one would fly with him! In 1913 he builded a charming  country house “Clos des Ailes” in Mortsel (nearby Antwerp). In the summer he stayed there with his wife and children.

As I live in the street where E.T.enjoyed full draft of the summer, it seemed interesting to me so many years later to take a look at his surroundings.
